Chakra means “wheel” and refers to energy points in your body. They are thought to be spinning disks of energy that should stay “open” and aligned, as they correspond to bundles of nerves, major organs, and areas of our energetic body that affect our emotional and physical well-being. So in other words Chakras are thought to be the energy centers of the body.
Some believe there are 114 different chakras, but there are seven major chakras that run along our spine. These are the chakras that I refer to in this blog.
Each of these seven main chakras has a name, color and located at a specific area of the spine to the crown of the head, and have a specific health focus.
Root Chakra
Color – Red
Location – base of the spine
Element - earth
Meaning – Identity, stability, grounding, survival
A blocked root chakra can manifest as physical issues like arthritis, constipation, and bladder or colon problems, or emotionally through feeling insecure about finances, our basic needs (food, shelter, water) and deep feelings of fear. When the root chakra is balanced, it is thought to create feelings of security, positivity, energy, independence, and strength.
Sacral Chakra
Color – Orange
Location – Below the belly button
Element – water
Meaning – Emotions, sexuality, pleasure, creativity, compassion, and adaptability
When the sacral chakra is unstable, it’s thought to cause emotional outbursts, a lack of creativity, and sex-obsessed thoughts or lack of sexual desire. Physical issues associated organs, like urinary tract infections, lower back pain, and impotency.
Sola Plexus Chakra
Color – Yellow
Location – Stomach area
Element - Fire
Meaning – Self esteem, confidence, personal power
Blockages in the third chakra are often experienced through digestive issues like ulcers, heartburn, eating disorders, and indigestion. On an emotional level, if the solar plexus chakra is imbalanced, it is believed to cause feelings of depression and low self-esteem. When it’s balanced, it would become a source of energy, productivity, and confidence.
Heart Chakra
Color – Green
Location – Centre of the chest
Element – Air
Meaning – Compassion, trust, passion, and self love
The heart chakra connects lower chakras to the higher ones. Blocks in our heart chakra can manifest in our physical health through heart problems, asthma, and weight issues. When the Heart Chakra is out of balance, it is believed to cause anger, lack of trust, anxiety, jealousy, fear, and moodiness.
The Throat Chakra
Color – Blue
Location – Throat
Element – Ether / Oxygen
Meaning – Communication
Voice and throat problems as well as any problems with everything surrounding that area, such as the teeth, gums, and mouth, can indicate a blockage. Blocks or misalignment can also be seen through dominating conversations, gossiping, speaking without thinking, and having trouble speaking your mind. When in alignment, you will speak and listen with compassion and feel confident when you speak because you know you are being true to yourself with your words.
Third Eye Chakra
Color- indigo
Location – Forehead
Element – None
Meaning – intuition, imagination, intellect, wisdom, and spiritual power
Blockages can manifest as headaches, issues with sight or concentration, and hearing problems, living in your head. When open and in alignment, it’s thought that people will follow their intuition and be able to see the big picture.
Crown Chakra
Color – Violet
Location – Top of the head
Element – Thought
Meaning – Awareness, consciousness, life purpose, divine connection
Opening the crown chakra is believed to connect a person to their higher self, since it’s the place of spirituality, enlightenment, and energetic thoughts. It is tied to inner wisdom. When unbalanced, the crown chakra is thought to influence depression, disconnection from the outside world, frustration, destructive emotions and lack of life purpose.
Chakra balancing, healing and realignment involve many things including yoga, meditation, healthy diet and even music / sound vibrations.
